We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We put together a development team and began working on the game. It was tremendously successful with over 21,000 backers contributing over $1.3 million to the campaign. In June of 2016 we launched a Kickstarter campaign to make the vision into a reality. Done in Unity it was an immediate hit with almost a half million views on YouTube. In March of 2016, Nightdive Studios released our video of our vision of System Shock Remastered. This explains why backers are not currently playing the game. The original delivery date of the game was supposed to be the end of 2017 but that has now come and gone and Kick has admitted Nightdive have made mistakes. But he’s keen to reassure that this isn’t the end.In an update today, Nighdive’s CEO Stephen Kick has now confirmed there was trouble afoot as the team lost focus and the project started to become something more than just a remaster. After realising the situation, Kick decided to pause development of the game to reevaluate the game that they wanted to make, and the game that the fans want them to make. The budget for the project also exploded, leading to Nightdive talking to publishing partners to bring in more money. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.”īy moving away from the spirit of System Shock the team was no longer creating the game that the Kickstarter backers had paid their money for. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. “Maybe we were too successful,” says Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick in a Kickstarter backer update. Since then it’s lived up to Kickstarter expectations with several delays, and now a hiatus on the back of severe overscoping and feature creep. A popular Kickstarter campaign in 2016 led to the team exceeding its $900k target for a total of $1.35m. Developer Nightdive, a studio created with the specific intention to bring back ‘lost and forgotten games’ for consumption by modern audiences, has paused development of its System Shock remake.
